Rise Up Safe Rider promoted at ACUHO-I / APPA Housing Facilities Conference
January 24, 2011 EU Website No CommentsAs a cooperative effort, the Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation and Elevator U attended the Housing Facilities Conference, October 12-15, 2010 in Charlotte, North Carolina. This conference was co-sponsored by the Association of College and University Housing Officers-International (ACUHO-I) and APPA: The Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers (APPA).
The Conference “Keeping on Track” Providing the Foundation for Quality Student Housing, fostered leadership, addressed challenges, and explored trends in college and university housing.
The newly developed university program, Rise Up Safe Rider is now available through the EESF website, as well as with a link from the Elevator U website.
EESF and EU worked together for several years to create a campaign for the university setting. Several universities were invited to participate in the development of the program. Concepts were used from communication classes at both Michigan State University and Purdue University. Initial components plus an entertaining video of students exploring safe riding methods were developed by Michigan State University.
Rise Up Safe Rider program materials are user-friendly for malls, airports, and transit systems, as they are generic in the safe riding rules with eye-catching graphics.
The Goal of the Rise Up Safe Rider informational program is to educate the college and university students on the safe and proper use of elevators, escalators and moving walks.
Program materials include: Posters, Tri-fold informational brochure, Public Service Announcement, Press Release, Safety Article and support material for informational booths and a Residence Assistants program.
The Conference provided a great opportunity for members of both the ACHUHO-I and APPA groups to learn about the successful effort between EESF, the student volunteers from Michigan State University and Elevator U in creating the Rise Up Safe Rider safety program. It was anticipated that the majority of those who attended this session had not had any prior exposure to either EESF or Elevator U. Both EESF and EU benefited by getting our messages out to them in this setting by distributing over 300 Rise Up Safe Rider brochures to interested volunteers, as well as promotional information about membership in Both EESF and Elevator U.
The next event will be held October 3-6, 2011, in Orlando, FL. Discussion between EESF and EU is underway on the next collaboration.
